Exhausted due to the early morning wake-up call and lack of sleep from our travels from Germany to Egypt, yet full of hope and excitement for all that Egypt would bring – we jumped straight into ministry the day after we arrived. We attended a Sudanese church where one of my students, Ben, was able to preach on “Finishing the Race” and two of my other students, Izzy and Toby, were able to share testimonies of how God has been working in their life over the past few months. None of my students had ever preached or spoken in a church setting before, and seeing every single one of them have the opportunity to preach and share their testimonies with such boldness and confidence over the course of being in Egypt was nothing short of seeing the goodness of God work in and through them over the past few months. They’ve all grown significantly in trusting the Lord even when times are scary – and have learned to allow God to take the reins. To all my students reading this – Mum/Chewbekah is so proud of you.
A few of the incredible ministries we were able to partner with while in Egypt were: teaching Religious Studies weekly at a Sudanese school, preaching at both Sudanese and Egyptian Youth Groups weekly, Park Evangelism multiple times a week, Teaching English at a Sudanese Community Center, Preaching at Sudanese Churches every Sunday, and lots and lots of Kid’s Ministry.
One of my team’s favorite ministries that we did in Egypt was Sudanese and Syrian Home Visits. Each week we visited multiple families and spent several hours hearing their stories, talking, and praying for them. There was not a visit that went by where we didn’t leave touched by the words they shared with us of the heartbreak they have endured, yet the thankfulness to God they have despite all they’ve gone through. There were countless beautiful conversations we were able to have – but I want to share one in particular that I hold close to me:
We went to visit a Sudanese Refugee family who has been living in Egypt for many years now. The dad, mom, their two sons, and the dad’s mom were all living together in a very small, run-down apartment – no bigger than an “American-sized” living/dining room. While we were talking to them, a few of their friends also came by to visit and hear what we were sharing. While going back and forth getting to know one another, God told me to ask the family if there was anyone who needed prayer or healing. The dad and the grandma both said yes. Before I began praying, I asked the grandma if there was something in particular that she needed healing for – she then proceeded to say that about six years ago she was in an accident at work and broke her ribs. Since then, she has been in immense pain everyday with no way to receive help due to lack of money. I then prayed for her and asked God to bring healing over her ribs and body, but nothing ended up happening. Not lacking the faith that I had in God to heal her body, I prayed again, but still, nothing happened. We then continued the conversations we were having before, but just as we began speaking - God spoke to me again and said I needed to pray for her again and that He was going to heal her. So, I asked again immediately if I could pray for her. With no hesitation, she said yes. Before I started praying, I told her that I believe that God is a God who is able to restore her body completely and that through the Holy Spirit we hold the authority to do miracles just as Jesus did when he was on earth. I asked her what level of pain she was in and she said a 9 or 10. I prayed, and immediately all the pain was gone. Praise God! She was filled with such joy and thankfulness - that for the first time in years she is able to live again with zero pain in her body.
Once again, I’m blown away that the faithfulness of God in always following through with what He promises. I’m quickly learning the importance of being sensitive to the voice of God while also being obedient and persistent in what He is telling me to do. I know I serve a God who won’t let me down and who won’t go back on His promises.
One of my favorite moments from Egypt was when my team joined three other YWAM teams that were also in Egypt for outreach for a night of worship on the Nile River. We spent the first hour getting to know one another, sharing testimonies of the ways God has been working in our lives, and praying for one another. The second hour was spent lifting up the name of Jesus over Egypt and praying for revival in the land. It was absolutely beautiful to see us all coming together and worshiping God while on the boat going down the Nile – so surreal.
All in all Egypt was incredible - I met so many beautiful people, ate delicous (yet sometimes questionable) food, visited some pretty cool places (I swam in the Red Sea which has always been on my bucket list), and made lifelong memories. I'm so thankful God brought me here and allowed me to co-lead a team to this captivating nation.
Blessings,
